Toast of the Coast recipe: Ortega Lemonade

The first General Membership Meeting of the 2013-2014 year will feature some of our favorite recipes from the Junior League of Jacksonville's Toast of the Coast cookbook.

Ortega Lemonade

The perfect First Coast cooler for any outdoor summer event

4 gallons lemonade
8 (12-ounce) cans frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
4 (12-ounce) cans frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
4 (16-ounce) bottles Key lime juice
6 (1.75-liter) bottles citrus-flavored vodka
10 each lemons and limes, sliced
Ice

Combine the first 5 ingredients in a 48-quart cooler. Mix will with a wooden spoon. Add the lemon and lime slices. Add enough ice to fill the cooler 2/3 full. Fill the cooler to the top with water. Mix well. Pour over ice in tall glasses. Serve with straws.

Makes 50 servings

Service spotlight: Junior Achievement

Editor's note: Occasionally we'll spotlight an opportunity to get involved in the community above and beyond your Junior League of Jacksonville activity. This month Junior Leaguer Molly Roberts shares about how you can get involved with Junior Achievement.

I am the Special Events Coordinator for Junior Achievement and I wanted to reach out to you because I organize our Bowl-A-Thons, which are a national JA phenomena. Typically we do these events by industry and I am organizing one for Young Professionals. These are fun events and a great way to get out and socialize with other Young Professional groups in the area. We have lowered the cost for this bowl-a-thon to $50 per bowler. We are also taking the fundraising average + bowling average of each team and the team with the highest number will receive 40% of the proceeds back to their organization!

The money raised from our events go toward helping purchase new materials for the volunteers to use in the classroom when teaching. I have attached a flyer for the event and also a sheet that describes Junior Achievement.

Young Professionals Bowl-A-Thon:

* Saturday, May 18th  11:30-1:30
* Bowl America 10333 San Jose Blvd.
* Minimum $50 per bowler. (Six person teams)
* We will be taking each teams bowling average + fundraising average
and the team with the highest number will receive 40% of the
  proceeds back to their organization!

GATHER A TEAM and come support this great cause!

Locals Helping Locals: how YOU can help too!

Our very own League member Danielle Bush is doing more than just her League requirements, she is helping support a local family. Thanks Danielle for letting us know about this great local opportunity to help out!

The Children of the Pugh Family

Jacksonville local Rayhana Essau Goll started helping this family of six out here and there when she first met them about a year and half ago. When she found out this disabled father and laid off mother of four had found themselves living in a hotel room with no car, no food, and no permanent place to live she took it a step further.

Rayhana started a fundraising page for the Pugh family on www.gofundme.com, which allows individuals to collect donations for anything from assistance for medical bills, to mission trips and personal projects.

So far the page has raised $3,600 and they are close to the $5,000 goal that would get this family out of a hotel and into a reasonable living situation.

If you would like to find out more about this family and how you can help go to the fundraising page and you can email Rayhana directly.

The JLJ is proud to announce that we are Jacksonville Magazine's non-profit partner for 2013!
